What the mulch illustration shows
The illustration is titled 'What does mulch do?'
It shows a cross-section of soil with a tree growing up above the ground, a layer of mulch on the soil surface and some tree roots and minibeasts like earthworms underground.
Through a series of headings, it shows how mulch benefits plants and soil, and in turn the climate, in the following ways:
Mulch saves water by preventing loss through evaporation on a warm day.
Mulch slows the flow by helping water soak into the ground where we need it.
Mulch reduces weeds, thereby keeping more water and food for your plants.
Mulch keeps the soil cool by protecting the life underground which can die from overheating.
Mulch makes healthy soils by adding food and organic matter to the soil as it breaks down.
