Sensory story: the lifecycle of a poppy

a guided sensory story about the lifecycle of a poppy

This is a sensory story to understand and learn about the life of a poppy wildflower. Prepare the props and follow the story to deliver an engaging experience.

Before you start you will need

  • A shaker. This could be one you have, or you can easily make one using toilet rolls, milk bottle lids, strong tape (gaffer or electrical), dried beans, lentils or rice. Simply tape the milk bottle tops to the toilet roll encasing some of the beans in the middle. You can decorate the tube if you like.
  • Poppy seeds. The ones you buy for baking are cheaper than those for planting.
  • Compost or soil. You can dig some soil up from outside, but bagged compost is cleaner and technically edible, but we wouldn’t recommend eating it.
  • Hot water bottle or hand warmers.
  • Leaf ribbon. This can be bought online easily, just search for leaf ribbon. Or you can make it by folding green material into a concertina and drawing on a stem and two leaves, cut around the shapes and unfold.
  • Red petals. You can buy bags of material petals that look like singular poppy petals, or you can cut up red material into individual poppy petal shapes.
  • Honey.
