Volunteer opportunities at the Sensory Trust

Meet our volunteers

Walking group volunteer Hilary

"Walking is what we do but add to that nice chats with friends, with a break for a cuppa, and we always think the time's gone too quickly!"
Hilary, Walking Group Volunteer

"I've given a little of my time to the Sensory Trust but I've gained so much friendship, I feel my time has been repaid 100 fold." Marilyn, volunteer with Wednesday Wanderers

"I stood on the Beacon with two people in love. The man had a map and he showed us where he met his wife, where they did their courting where they had their children. His lady may not have recalled it all, but she felt showered with love. What little I did to contribute to this moment, just a little time, was repayed in full. I felt that by just making myself available to witness the recall of precious times was so worth while."
Mary, Bodmin walking group

Do you enjoy being in nature?

Are you interested in supporting people in your local local community?

If yes, then volunteering with the Sensory Trust could be perfect for you!

We are looking for volunteers to support one of our six dementia friendly activity groups in Cornwall.

Our volunteers are extremely valuable to us; they enable our groups to be sustainable and continue into the future, beyond the life of the projects. With six outdoor activity clubs up and running, we are in need of volunteers more than ever!

It is really important to us that our volunteers are perceptive, patient and understanding to the needs of the group. This requires them to take on a supportive role, as opposed to that of a leader. They are there to enable, rather than “do for”. They listen, encourage the individuals to make decisions and find ways to make these happen. Our volunteers ensure that everyone in the group is getting the most from the experience, and they never forget the teas/coffees and biscuits (now that would be unforgivable!)

We are looking for volunteers to provide support to participants of our outdoor activity groups. This includes mainly people diagnosed with dementia, their carers or family members but also other individuals in the group, such as community members.

Opportunities are available in the following activity groups:

  • Walking (groups in St. Austell, Bodmin and Bude areas)
  • Nature & gardens ( group based at Potager Garden, Constantine and group based at Paul near Penzance)
  • Pottery and walking ( group based in the St Ives area with sessions at Leach Pottery)

The role includes:

  • Greeting members at the start of the activity session
  • Helping new members integrate into the group
  • Ensuring group members have all left safely after the activity session has ended
  • Being responsible for activity accessories (e.g. first aid kits, refreshments, etc.)
  • Liaising between the activity group and the Sensory Trust

No experience necessary, training is offered in:

  • First Aid (Outdoor Activities)
  • Dementia Awareness

Travel expenses will be covered.

Our volunteers must be respectful and supportive of people living with dementia, their family carers and the issues they face on a daily basis, as well sensitive to different levels of mobility, stamina and confidence within the group. We are looking for volunteers who can support individuals to reach their capabilities within their range of physical health and mental wellbeing.

If you are interested in getting involved, please call Ellie at Sensory Trust on 01726 222900 or email erobinsoncarter@sensorytrust.org.uk

We are developing more outdoor activity groups in communities around Cornwall over the next 18 months and will post opportunities here as they arise. If you are interested in supporting older people with dementia but are unable to cover any of the locations mentioned, please feel free to call us to register your interest.

We look forward to hearing from you!
