Inclusive Access Workshops - South Hams
Working in partnership with South Hams District Council's
Coast and Countryside service the Sensory Trust has been
running workshops with a wide range of disability and Countryside
access and management stakeholder groups examining issues related
to inclusive access to the rich and varied landscape of this corner
of south Devon.
Workshop 2
Following
on from the first workshop this event brought together some of the same
participants as well as some new people. The aim was to get people outdoors
to try some hands on techniques and also to gain a better understanding
of how to overcome access barriers.
Together with the South Hams District Council, we gathered people at
one of their coastal sites, Strete Gate at the Slapton Ley nature reserve.
The day began with a Sensory Mapping exercise. Sensory mapping is being
developed as part of our Evaluation Toolkit (a tool for greenspace
managers to rate their site for sensory and inclusive value).
Sensory Mapping is an aid for people to learn about the amount
of sensory opportunities that can be found in a place.
After lunch people headed back out to the site to test it with
two other Evaluation Toolkit extracts:
1. Shared Perspectives: Small groups took on the perspective of
another group of people. In this instance it was divided into people
with a particular visual impairment, parents with small children
in buggies, and wheelchair users.
2.
Site checklist: Groups were givin a categorised list which they
filled in around the site. The categories ranged from getting there
and arrival to information provision, from comfort to access.
Ideas: The groups then reported back their findings, to enable
everyone to build up a better picture of what this particular site
had to offer, and also what was still needed to allow for better
access.
Comments: 'I found the Sensory mapping very thought provoking,
and will be using it to value my site'.
'It was great to get out on site and put some of the ideas into
practice'.
