Harlow New Town extension

Clients: Land Securities, Places for People

Sensory Trust has been contributing to the work on the extension to a substantial area to the north of Harlow New Town in Essex, UK.

Grimshaw, Rick Mather and Jan Gehl have been appointed to design a masterplan for the development of North Harlow in Essex. The development of the 970ha site will form part of the government’s East of England Plan, which proposes creating 10,000 new homes in the area around Harlow.

Sensory Trust is part of an advisory group which shares ideas and experiences that feed into the plans for the new development. The group includes sustainability expert Peter Guthrie from Cambridge University and public design specialists Gehl Architects.

The first meeting took place in November 2009 and was a good chance for Sensory Trust to contribute ideas around inclusive design, third places, public space design and restorative design.
