Capital Woodlands - opening up London's woods
Capital Woodlands is a three-year London Biodiversity Partnership
project supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund and managed by Trees
for Cities. It runs from February 2006 through to the end of 2008.
The project aims to raise appreciation of London’s woodlands
and increase public benefit and participation by undertaking access,
biodiversity, community and training work both in six ‘flagship’
woodlands and throughout the Capital. The programmes were developed
with a strong emphasis on strengthening links between woodland areas
and local communities, with five key objectives:
- Improving the management of London's woodlands and disseminating
good practice;
- Providing training in woodland mangement skills;
- Strengthening links between woodlands and communities through
outreach work and schools and community events;
- Supporting and recruiting volunteers;
- Supporting the educational use of woodlands in London.
The project is managed by Trees for Cities working in partnership with
BTCV, Forestry Commission, Greater London Authority, the London Boroughs
of Bromley, Croydon, Haringey, Merton and Redbridge and the Peabody Trust.
The Sensory Trust has played a key role in the project; undertaking
access reviews at the six flagship sites, working closely with the
Project Planning Officer, site managers and local community groups,
and facilitating the preparation of access plans at each site prior
to the submission of a bid of just under £1 million to the
Heritage Lottery Fund.
