Awakening Senses
The aim of Awakening Senses is to provide the opportunity for young people
who may be ordinarily socially excluded (for reasons of disability, impairment,
mental health, lack of self esteem or behavioral problems) to contribute
to a focus group considering the overall experience available at the Eden
Project. In doing so they not only benefit from the day but ensure future
young people, parents and carers that visit the Eden Project get an exciting
and inclusive experience.
It is well recognised that young people with access or impairment
issues are not often provided with the opportunity to share their
views and ideas or to influence how places like Eden deliver their
experiences.
The project will involve a day at Eden with pupils from Mid Cornwall
schools who have visual or hearing impairments, wheelchair users
or young people who have learning difficulties.
The project is supported by Youth Intervention Officers from Devon and
Cornwall Constabulary who will select the young people involved. The criteria
for this selection will be young people who are normally socially excluded
either by having an impairment, disability, self-esteem problem, learning
difficulty or special needs. The selection will take place by the Youth
Intervention Officers in conjunction with Schools Inclusion Co-ordinators
and Special Education Needs Co-ordinators. The families will be advised
of the activity and its outcomes by the Youth Intervention Officers and
the Sensory Trust.
The project is funded by Cornwall Children’s Fund.
