Accessible information design

Our research has shown that a failure to provide timely, accurate and accessible information is the second largest barrier preventing access for disabled and older visitors to a public greenspace.

Sensory Trust has exertise in designing information so that it is accessible and reaches the widest range of people. We are also very good at coming up with creative ideas of how to make information attractive by appealing to all the senses.

We offer consultancy in the following -

  • Review of current information provision and suggestions for how it can be improved, offering practical and often low-cost suggestions that can be implemented easily and quickly.
  • Development of information design briefs to outline key requirements and priorities, and useful to give to designers so they understand what you need
  • Production of an Access Guide to inform people about key access information to help them plan a visit
  • Creative waymarking and signage systems that get away from standard finger posts
  • Gorgeous conference booklets
  • Maps - tactile, symbol-based, magnetic
  • Interpretation based on sensory engagement techniques
  • Materials to accompany sensory trails
  • Menus, leaflets, booklets etc in Braille, Large Print, Easy English, Widgit

If you are thinking about something that isn't on the list do give us a call. If we can't help we may well know someone else who can.

Examples of our work

Eden Banners
Client: Eden Project

A series of banners welcome visitors to Eden Project, lining the walkways down from the car parks to the visitor centre with a simple conversation. The banners were designed by the Sensory Trust's Information designer, Stuart Spurring.

Access guide
Client: Eden Project

We developed an online visitor information guide with key access details to help visitors plan a visit to Eden. We also designed new maps and wayfinding materials for the Eden Sessions, to make it easy for visitors to find their way.

Seale Hayne wayfinding
Client: Dame Hannahs

We have been working with Dame Hannahs to create distinctive and easy to use wayfinding designs, including maps, to help visitors find their way around their visitor/activity centre.

Out to Play
Sensory Trust and Cornwall Council

New publication inspired by playful places in Cornwall to visit and playful people who have been involved in improving their local play areas. The book passes on ideas for engaging children and young people in designing and developing their own play areas and examples of natural playful features with low installation and low maintenance costs in recognition of the need to make resources stretch further.
