Sensory Trust recommends...

Stuck in the airport, bored by Brown and fed up with Follett? Sensory Trust recommends some holiday reading that might inspire you so much, you'll actually want to go back to work. Surely not! If you order them from Amazon.co.uk by following the links on this page a percentage of the price will go to help us maintain this web site.

Non-fiction

The Art of Travel - Alain de Botton's humorous and wide-ranging exploration of why we insist on moving from one place to another. A good one to reflect on after five hours in the airport.

The Eyes of the Skin - Juhani Pallasmaa. Anyone wanting to understand how we percieve space should read this... although you'll need some peace and quiet. Not one for the hotel poolside.

In Praise of Slow: How a Worldwide Movement Is Challenging the Cult of Speed - Carl Honoré's book about why most of us are in need of a holiday. Rails against the idea of speed for speed's sake. Dispatched within 24 hours... no irony there then.

In the Bubble, Designing in a Complex World - John Thackara. How to design a world in which we rely less on stuff, and more on people. At the heart of "In the Bubble" is a belief, informed by a wealth of real-world examples, that ethics and responsibility can inform design decisions without impeding social and technical innovation.

The Spell of the Sensuous - David Abram. Describes the influence of spoken and written language and rational thinking on our perception of the natural world around us.

The Tipping Point - Malcolm Gladwell's inspiring book about how things change and how ideas spread.

Fiction

Fierce Invalids Home from Hot Climates - Tom Robbins. More multi-layered side-swiping from 'the most dangerous author in the world'. This one features wheelchairs, the CIA, shamanism and (Dan Brown fans take note) a plot, of sorts, in the Vatican. Parrot lovers should approach this book with caution, however.

Perfume - Patrick Süskind's weird and wonderful book about scent and murder in Paris. Süskind's pungent prose evokes the smells of the gutters and perfumeries of Paris.
