Engaging Through the Senses
Sarah Williams (Inclusive Designer)
The Design Team at the Sensory Trust have been looking at ways
of creating links with a variety of organisations, in order to work
on new and exciting initiatives, in order to create richer,
accessible experiences in the outdoor environment.
The Team aims to establish ways of working collaboratively
with communities and individuals, who are unable to access green
space due to physical and social barriers, and lack of available,
appropriate information. Our goal is to ensure that green environments
meet the needs of communities, through developing links with the
healthcare sector, arts organisations, research bodies and user
groups.
An example of our current work is being created
in collaboration with the fashion designer, Professor Helen Storey.
This environment looks at how the senses can motivate us to learn,
explore and engage in our surroundings, allowing us to wonder at
our capabilities and achievements, and become more aware of ourselves
and our natural surroundings.
Equally exciting are the possibilities we are exploring in the
Health Sector. Working with Sensory Integration
Consultants, we are exploring methods of creating specific therapeutic
‘green’ environments, where people can re-engage in
play, and use nature as a primary means of expression and ultimately,
as a positive environment for healing and well-being.
We are also working closely with the Eden Project’s designer-makers
on exhibit design. The aim is to give all visitors
to Eden, young and old, a richer experience, which engages more
of the senses, thus allowing people to touch, smell and feel their
way around Eden!
