Sensory Trust aims

More engaging and memorable connections between people and place

Social issues related to isolation, loneliness and lack of purpose have at their root a disengagement from society. Reconnecting people with the place they live, and with the communities that share the place is a primary concern of the Sensory Trust. Any improvement to the outdoor environment can only be sustainable if it has at its heart a mechanism for re-engaging people who are currently excluded from the places where they live and where they can meet others.

More accessible environments for everyone

Outdoor public places are where much of society takes place. They are where we rub shoulders with people we do not know, with cultures, backgrounds and opinions that we do not necessarily share. To be excluded from those places is to be excluded from taking part in and contributing to society. Sensory Trust promotes, supports and undertakes the creation of more inclusive public spaces and better quality, more engaging environments for everyone.

Increased professional awareness

For these improvements to be sustainable we have to embed new ways of thinking about public space and about how people want to use it. Sensory Trust helps planners, designers, policy-makers and managers gain an improved understanding of the issues surrounding inclusion and outdoor spaces.

We do this by:

  • Working with a diverse range of projects and organisations to create and promote best practice examples of inclusive environmental design, management and communication.
  • Facilitating the dissemination of inclusiveness information and expertise to a range of targeted audiences including: policy-makers, environmental designers/managers and potential beneficiaries of such environments.
  • Facilitating the exchange of views, experience and expertise amongst potential beneficiaries and practitioners.
  • Undertaking action research and scoping studies to identify and try out new approaches to inclusive design and management.
